The Parkside Post

Loungefly mystery boxes, and the duplicate you should expect

Seven of the last twenty-five posts in r/Loungefly were mystery box hauls, and two of them were people working out why they got so many repeats. The arithmetic is not hidden.

Five boxes, three duplicate pins. Twelve mystery items, three different ones. Both posts landed in r/Loungefly this week, and both people were trying to work out whether they had been unlucky or had. Usually it is neither.

Two different things get called a mystery box

A blind box is one sealed item at a fixed price with the number of designs printed on the packaging. Loungefly's Bluey charms run $20 across six designs, the matching pin box is $12, and Disney Parks' mini backpack charms are $25 across six, five shown and one not. You know the price and you know the pool. A retailer's mystery sale is a different animal: you buy something, an unspecified Loungefly item turns up, usually well under retail. The hauls people were posting in late October came from a $10-a-box sale. Nobody publishes that pool or the odds.

The duplicate math

Six designs at even odds: four boxes give you four different charms 27.8% of the time, five boxes 9.3%, six boxes a full set 1.5%. Seven boxes cannot all be different, because there are only six designs. Even odds is a modelling assumption, not a published number: we could not find published odds for any Loungefly blind box. One thing worth remembering is that you are usually drawing from a shelf or a shipping carton, not from a shuffled pool, which is why the standing advice in these threads is not to buy several from the same shelf.

Does spending more help

The haul threads argue about this constantly. One collector reckons a $500 order pulled eight full-size bags while a $20 order pulled junk. Another buys the same number every time, says the results swing wildly, and blames the packer. Nobody has tested it. Both are stories.

What to check first

How many designs are in the pool, and whether that is on the box. What one of those items costs at retail. Whether the sale is final, because most are, which means you have bought it before you know what is inside. And if a listing bundles a bag with unnamed extras, read what they are: a $75 box advertising one mini backpack and unspecified fun items can be padded with lanyards and pens.

What we cannot tell you

We do not have any of these boxes in stock, so we cannot photograph a pull. We have not opened a park charm box, and we could not find published odds for one. We also cannot tell you what a mystery bag is worth secondhand, because that depends on which design comes out.

If you are buying one anyway

Pay a price you would be happy with for the worst item in the pool, for the fun of opening it. If the worst outcome would annoy you, it is not a good deal, whatever the best one is. And a duplicate is not a scam. It is the arithmetic.
